Biotechnology is usually defined as the exploitation and manipulation of biological resources to deliver commercial and social benefits. This subject is designed to cover the fundamental aspects of biotechnology including basic and advanced methods used in recombinant DNA technology, recombinant protein production in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, molecular diagnostics, microbial production of therapeutic agents, vaccine production, bioremediation, bioreactors and regulations and patenting in biotechnology.
Learning Outcomes
- contrast both the basic and advanced techniques used in biotechnology;
- design biotechnology experiments that can be applied to a wide variety of problems;
- discuss the ethics and patenting and regulatory procedures associated with biotechnology.
