This subject will provide students with an overview of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the successful health management of disasters in the Australian and the global context with a special focus on problems with high likelihood and risk in the tropics.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply the principles and phases of disaster management to a variety of scenarios in both developed and developing countries, focussing on the tropics;
- Critically assess the risks and needs of disaster-stricken communities, and the implications for disaster management;
- Differentiate the role of governments, NGOs, the military, international agencies and other stakeholders in disaster management;
- Appraise/articulate the ethical, cultural and legal aspects of disaster health care;
- Critically reflect on the role of public health in the disaster management team.
