This subject covers the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnosis, management and prevention of major conditions contributing to mortality and morbidity in children living in tropical settings, including Indigenous Australian children. Whilst the majority of teaching for this subject is lecture based, there are opportunities to learn from and with peers via a group presentation, case discussions and interactive sessions throughout the course. This subject has a strong clinical focus and as such is recommended for clinicians only. It is a pre-requisite to TM5559: Clinical Tropical Paediatrics.

Learning Outcomes

• assess a sick child and using an understanding of pathophysiology develop a management plan for shock;
• explain the pathophysiology, diagnosis and clinical management of common diseases of childhood in tropical environments;
• evaluate the various stages of under nutrition in children, including specific issues such as iron deficiency, and plan appropriate management;
• examine public health issues affecting child health in tropical and resource poor settings;
• articulate the principles of management of newborns in resource poor settings and examine public health issues affecting child health in resource poor settings.
