Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.
This subject will provide the foundation theoretical and professional skills necessary for competent practice in the assessment and treatment/management of speech sound disorder in children and adolescents. Aetiological factors, and models and processes explaining speech difference and impairment will be discussed. Pre-literacy skills including phonological awareness and their relationship to both speech and written literacy (reading and spelling) will be discussed. Implications across linguistic and cultural contexts will be considered. Assessment and intervention methods will be explored with respect to current theories and evidence-based practice principles. The effects of speech impairments on activity and participation in educational and community contexts will be explored.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse child speech assessment data and determine appropriate intervention goals;
- formulate and justify intervention plans and approaches based on sound theoretical and evidence-based principles;
- explain the impact of speech sound disorders on activity and participation in educational and community contexts.

Assessment: | end of semester exam (40%); quizzes or tests (15%); assignments (15%); assignment - intervention plan (30%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | Students must achieve at least 50% in each individual assessment item and must achieve at least 50% overall in order to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes. |
