This subject builds on the topics introduced in SL1002 and introduces more advanced linguistics concepts as a basis for studies in speech pathology including semantics, pragmatics and language variation. This subject introduces how these various aspects of language are learned. Students will also have the opportunity to observe applications of linguistics and phonetics in community and speech pathology practice environments.

Learning Outcomes

• apply knowledge and skills in analysing grammatical forms;
• demonstrate and apply knowledge of the ways that language is used to convey meanings and to acheive speakers' purposes;
• describe the normal development of the basic structures and uses of language.

Prerequisites:	SL1002allow concurrent for SL1002.

Assessment:	end of semester exam (40%); quizzes or tests (40%); assignments (20%); hurdle professional experience (%).
Special Assessment Requirements:	Students must achieve at least 50% in all individual weighted assessment items, must pass the non-weighted hurdle assessment, and achieve at least 50% overall to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes and must attend all professional experience hours.
