Available to Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Postgraduate students.
Effective communication is a critical skill for a successful career in research oriented science, environmental management, public policy and/or education. This subject provides postgraduate students the opportunity to develop and practice advanced oral and written skills necessary for relaying research findings in the biological and environmental sciences to stakeholders in research (ie other scientists, managers, policy makers, industry and the general public). Students will: (1) refine their critical thinking, reading and writing techniques in order to present and publish peer reviewed science; and (2) communicate scientific research with public policy stakeholders including managers. The ethical and legal requirements for best practice science will also be covered. Students will complete written and oral assessment tasks encompassing a range of communication styles and tools. This is a blended mode subject. Students will need to complete online learning materials each week, before attending a discussion oriented workshop on the topic.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise scientific research, including literature pertaining to recent developments in a science discipline;
- demonstrate scientific written communication skills at a level expected for publication in peer-reviewed science journals;
- communicate research clearly and coherently to non-specialist audiences, namely the general public, industry, and/or policy stakeholders;
- critically review ethical and legal issues, principles and processes relevant to scientific research;
- convey scientific ideas, arguments and conclusions through advanced oral communication skills and a variety of media.
