This subject explores the political environment and institutions of public policy and administration in Australia. It first surveys the historical context of politics and government, including shifting values and ideas of the role of the state, and the evolution of federalism. The subject then focuses on the role of parties, interest groups, parliament, cabinet, and the public service in policy formulation and implementation. Analysis is applied to a range of specific policy areas, including economic and social policy.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the history, values and institutions underpinning public policy and administration;
- Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in Australian politics and policy;
- Acquire and apply research, analytical, and writing skills pertinent to work in, and related to public administration.
