This subject provides a strong foundation in counter prescribing and the provision of unscheduled products, S2 and S3 medications for patients who present to a pharmacist with self limiting conditions. This subject will further develop the understanding of aspects of professional pharmacy practice with an emphasis on the process of counter prescribing and this theme will be used as a vehicle to develop students' communication skills with the aid of simulated patients. The subject will discuss the relevant role of the pharmacist along with pharmacy assistants / technicians encompassing legal, ethical and professional issues and the management of common presentations that are within the scope of practice of a pharmacist. The subject will also examine the implication of genetics in pharmacy practice focusing on common genetic disorders in adult life, the molecular biology of cancer and understanding the basis of inter-patient variation in drug response. The subject will give the student a strong practical focus and enable them to competently manage common, minor, self limiting conditions in daily pharmacy practice and have an understanding of the impact of genetic variability in individuals and populations on disease and drug response.
