This subject provides theoretical knowledge associated with the advanced and extended scope of practice provided by Nurse Practitioners. It will examine issues that impact on the professional attributes required for effective practice. Students will explore the features of advanced practice within a nursing paradigm, examine legal and ethical issues pertaining to nurses working in private and interdependent practice, and investigate health policies and politics relevant to advanced practice. Students will also have the opportunity to refine reflective practice skills to incorporate into their own specialty field of practice.
Learning Outcomes
- develop knowledge, skills and professional attributes required for safe and effective practice as a Nurse Practitioner;
- apply information and research to the development of a Nurse practitioner model of service delivery within a specific health service context;
- develop a business case for consideration of a health service team;
- explore issues of policy, legalities and ethics as they relate to Nurse Practitioner roles within the Australian health care context;
- explore the influence of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture on their interpretation of the concept of health and access to health services;
- develop a suitable model of reflection to systematically analyse own practice;
- articulate and apply principles of clinical governance to their own anticipated NP role as described in their business case.
