This subject focuses on the prevention and nursing management of some common diseases and health related problems and the impacts of these for people living in or visiting tropical regions. Nursing within the tropics is primarily concerned with the common diseases and health problems increasing morbidity and mortality within South East Asia and Western Pacific region. Priority is given to those of public health significance across northern Australia. The common diseases include major tropical infections (e.g. malaria and tuberculosis); Vector-borne infections e.g. Dengue and Ross River viral disease, and Japanese encephalitis; Fevers e.g. leptospirosis, and melioidosis; Gastrointestional infections e.g. protozoal and helminthic infections; and others e.g. leprosy, Buruli or Daintree ulcers, scabies, bites and stings - marine and land-based; skin cancers and heat related disorders. Nursing within the tropics also explores how climate and location impacts on health care provision across northern Australia.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations of common diseases and health related problems across northern Australia;
- discuss preventative strategies and nursing management of the common diseases and health related problems prevalent within northern Australia;
- demonstrate an understanding of the impact of climate and location on health care provision across northern Australia.
