This subject provides the student with the opportunity to design and develop a project (policy, teaching package, risk management or quality improvement project, evidence-based research project) which can be used to improve client care and explore an in-depth area of interest within a chosen specialty. The student will explore the elements of clinical governance in a contemporary health care environment. The students learning is thus extended and applied to addressing nursing and midwifery problems related to a clinical setting. The topic for the major assignment is negotiated with the subject coordinator. The project should be original and clinically focused and related to the students work setting.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate the ability to design a project that addresses an identified clinical problem relating to a specialist nursing/midwifery care environment;
• discuss the elements of clinical governance in a contemporary health care environment;
• differentiate the contributions that critical thinking, reflection and analysis play in project development;
• articulate the relationship between the project and improved client care in the chosen specialty area;
• explore and apply evidence-based information about clinical governance to project development.
