This subject has been designed as a capstone for the Bachelor of Nursing Science offered at James Cook University. The capstone subject is designed to integrate the student's ability to critically reflect upon discipline specific knowledge with authentic learning experiences in a supportive environment and culture. As an exit subject students will be provided with opportunities to apply knowledge and experience gained over the course of study. A crucial aspect of the capstone is to foster each student's ability to exercise clinical and professional judgement, facilitating a smooth transition to their new role as a registered nurse. The purpose of the subject will be to expand upon acquired knowledge gained in the previous subjects as well as providing practical strategies to assist the student to gain graduate employment and establish a career in nursing. The capstone subject will include an emphasis on assessment, implementation and collaborative management of a person requiring complex health care. Clinical experience will occur in medical, surgical and specialised areas of nursing practice. Students will be introduced to basic principles of management and leadership exploring the concepts of accountability, responsibility, change and influence within organisations. Key areas for this subject will be scope and standards of professional practice, clinical application of knowledge and nursing care, interpersonal collaboration and communication, supervision and delegation and the quality improvement of care.
