The purpose of this subject is to provide students with an understanding of the impact of nutrition on health. The subject will provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assess and manage the nutritional status of individuals and groups within diverse clinical and cultural contexts. The students will learn the physiological basis of nutrition, nutritional requirements, the nature and composition of foods and food groups; nutritional assessment; and social, cultural and economic aspects of nutrition relevant to local, national and international settings. Students will be introduced to a broad scope of health interventions to treat, manage, and promote optimal nutritional status in a variety of client groups. Special nutrient needs of people across the lifespan, including pregnancy and lactation are discussed and nutritional needs of those experiencing acute and chronic disease processes will be addressed alongside key factors relevant to the prevention of chronic disease and illness.
