This clinical subject is one of a suite of three second year clinical electives, all of which focus on the consolidation of the repertoire of clinical skills learnt in the four previous clinical subjects, Clinical Nursing Practice 1-4. These skills need to be integrated into the provision of direct patient care, with a particular focus on reflection and observation by the student of those influences operating within the specific context of each of the elective subjects, as described below. This subject is focussed on the challenges associated with the provision of nursing care in rural and remote communities. Building on Clinical Nursing Practice 1-4 students have the opportunity to consolidate their nursing knowledge and skills while exploring the complexities and priorities of nursing care within a clinical specialty area in our local context. In addition to providing specific nursing assessment knowledge, this unit aims to provide theories and principles that assist students to plan for appropriate nursing care within complex working environments. The diversity of the role of the nurse as a multi-skilled clinician and the issues related to access to health services in an isolated geographical location will also be considered. In addition, conditions, diseases and trauma that are unique to rural and remote areas will be discussed with reflection on appropriate multidisciplinary management approaches that endeavour to take into account cultural, individual and community concerns.
