NS1012 - Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice

Available to level 1 students enrolled in the BNSc.

This subject introduces concepts of evidence based practice and research. Students will develop and consolidate knowledge and skills in identifying and sourcing evidence for their practice. Various sources of evidence for practice including the library, electronic databases and Internet will be investigated. The traditions of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research will be introduced, with a focus on the language of research. Translating evidence to inform practice will be discussed. From this learning, students can begin the preparation for nursing practice in a world where health care services are influenced by various factors, dynamic and constantly changing.

Learning Outcomes

• explain the links between nursing, knowledge and experience, including the role research plays in nursing practice;
• demonstrate the ability to search for and identify current nursing literature and research;
• identify the key elements of nursing research and how it applies to contemporary nursing practice;
• describe how qualitative and quantitative research processes contribute to knowledge growth and influence nursing practice;
• explain how evidence impacts on nursing knowledge and practice, including how it effects and initiates practice change;
• demonstrate critical thinking and reflective practice approaches in the application of new knowledge to nursing practice.
