This subject builds on the principles and concepts of the role of microbes in aquatic animal disease introduced in second year in the subject MI2031:03 (Marine Microbiology). Aquatic Microbial Pathobiology aims to cover the "disease" anatomy of the major groups of aquatic animals, the major disease causing microbes, particularly in aquaculture, introduce the concepts of disease in populations and understand the options for control.

Learning Outcomes

• examine the role of disease in aquatic populations;
• describe the main aquatic animal pathogens;
• assess provided information and construct challenging questions;
• explain the laws and personal responsibilities in aquatic animal health;
• apply the main lines of investigation for diseases;
• recommend appropriate actions following a disease outbreak;
• practice the diagnostic approach to aquatic animal health;
• investigate the effect of a pathogen on vaccinated host fish;
• synthesise results from experiments and conclude fish susceptibility;
• experience the excitement of discovering new science.
