Year: | 2016 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band 2 |
Administered by: | College of Science and Engineering |
This subject builds on the mathematics experience of students from secondary school. Topics covered include the number system, arithmetic operations and elementary algebra, exponentials and logarithms and trigonometry. An introduction to differential calculus is presented. The subject will have an emphasis on engineering applications.
Learning Outcomes
- Perform arithmetic efficiently, justifying processes used;
- Manipulate and solve algebraic equations involving non-integer powers and exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and polynomial functions;
- Sketch graphs of different functions to analyse and interpret the important features of the mathematics;
- Differentiate algebraic expressions involving non-integer powers and exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and polynomial functions;
- Communicate mathematical thinking incorporating the concepts and methods presented in the course.
