Available to all undergraduate students.
This subject explores Indigenousness. It is an invitation to critically engage in contemporary discussions about 'Indigenous knowledges'. Through opportunities to interact directly with Indigenous Australians in their own country, this subject explores issues surrounding cross-cultural views of landscape and wilderness. It further explores relationships of power, notions of authenticity and assertions of Indigenous identities. The subject links learnings from Indigenous Australian and western knowledge systems through a range of different learning environments including: fieldtrip activities to Aboriginal tourist attractions; full-day workshops on the university campus and online study materials and activities. It is therefore essential that students have access to the World Wide Web to complete the subject. Those students who do not have access to LearnJCU must contact the subject co-ordinator.

Learning Outcomes
- comparatively analyse the complex interaction of western and Indigenous knowledge systems by undertaking fieldtrips designed to expose students to different ways of seeing history, social issues, landscape and life in general;
- examine the ways in which dominant western discourses have shaped the historical and contemporary representation of Indigenous Australian cultures by discussing and writing sound arguments in a sustained and cogent way about responses to a range of Indigenous texts, voices and perspectives;
- analyse a number of issues which inform Indigenous Australian knowledges and discuss their social, cultural and political implications;
- identify opportunities to integrate relevant aspects of Indigenous knowledges and approaches to teaching and learning into the formal education system;
- develop the capacity to plan, organise and articulate reasoned argument in a limited timeframe both independently and in small group discussion.
