The subject aims to provide an academic award in infection prevention and control that is responsive to learning needs, national accreditation requirements and requirements of employers; to educate health professionals about infection control in a range of health care settings particularly where resources are limited. Focus will be on infection prevention and control in rural and remote settings in Australia and in developing countries.

Learning Outcomes

• outline the principles of the chain of infection in the context of different pathogenic microorganisms and compare and contrast non-specific and specific host immune responses;
• appraise the significance of healthcare-associated infections and their causative pathogens, and plan and implement strategies for their management;
• apply infection prevention and control principles, strategies and policies in a range of health care settings in developed and developing countries;
• design strategies for the education of health personnel in infection prevention and control, and implement continuing professional development plans for infection prevention and control personnel;
• initiate and maintain a successful team approach to infection prevention and control and evaluate the team's performance;
• analyse building design and infrastructure and evaluate its impact on infection prevention and control.
