This subject explores the issues that impact on the provision of nursing care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students undertaking this subject will develop an understanding and awareness of the historical, social and cultural issues which influence the health of Indigenous people in Australia today. Students should develop the critical and reflective abilities to practice in a culturally safe manner.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an appreciation of the diversity of cultural perspectives, values, and beliefs;
- identify the principles of effective cross cultural communication between nurses and clients with whom they work;
- describe the impact of colonisation, history and the policy eras on current health inequalities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
- compare current Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health status, mortality and morbidity patterns with Indigenous populations from other countries;
- identify and discuss social determinants of health and health inequalities that contribute to the excess mortality and morbidity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
- outline strategies to "close the gap" in health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians;
- discuss health services, workforce, policy and political issues that impact on health care planning and the delivery of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
- identify the principles of culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
