This subject introduces best-practice approaches to the sustainable management of terrestrial landscapes and natural resources in Australia. Lectures provide an overview of selected topics in NRM whilst practicals and fieldwork are used to develop skills in NRM activities and to illustrate the complexities of putting NRM theory into practice. Postgraduate students are expected to demonstrate a capacity to independently identify and analyse NRM related problems and to be able to effectively and eloquently present their ideas to a diverse audience.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will hone their appreciation of links between the science underlying the practice of natural resource management and the human dimensions that allow priorities for NRM activities to be set and science-based prescriptions for best practice NRM to be adopted. Multidisciplinary approaches to NRM are emphasised most strongly. Particular emphasis is placed on biodiversity conservation, use of fire for environmental purposes, carbon inventory and conservation, and on adaptation to climate change from a natural resource management perspective. Postgraduate students are expected to contribute original, discipline-based approaches to the broad subject matter under consideration.
