Statics: Review of forces and moments: Couples, Equivalent systems. Objects in Equilibrium: Reactions, Static equilibrium, Free-body diagrams. Analysis of Structures: trusses, frames and machines. Distributed loads. Internal Forces and Moments: Bending moment and shear force diagrams. Dynamics: Review of kinematics and kinetics of particles: Curvilinear motion (x/y and n/t) of particles; Relative motion of two particles; Work-energy methods. Kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies: General plane motion; Relative motion; Kinetics of rigid bodies.
Learning Outcomes
- to develop and practise tactics for problem identification, formulation and solution;
- to familiarise students with common structures and mechanisms;
- to provide students with knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering statics and dynamics;
- to provide students with techniques for analysing forces, structures and the performance of mechanisms.
