This subject has been designed to equip pre-service teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to teach secondary curriculum areas to Year 9. The subject will include fundamentals of and current debates in, curriculum design. Teaching areas offered align with Learning Areas (English, Humanities and Social Science, Science, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Technologies, ARTS and LOTE). Students will normally select two KLAs. The subject will include investigation of the rationale for each learning area, the nature and design of the curriculum frameworks in each area including examples of Queensland and international jurisdictions. The subject will develop discipline specific lesson and unit planning, assessment and teaching strategies appropriate to junior secondary.
Learning Outcomes
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy informed by the nature of knowledge and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just curriculum in chosen areas;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and ICTs as they relate to secondary school age student learning;
- identify and evaluate the curriculum framework, content, processes and skills and different assessment modes in each teaching area;
- create and evaluate modes of inquiry and structures appropriate to their chosen Learning Areas (LAs);
- Incorporate a range of perspectives as part of teaching and learning programs wihthin the Learning Areas (LAs) including Indigenous and global perspectives.
