Available as a core subject for third year Early Childhood Education students.
This subject introduces students to the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and its link to the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian National Curriculum. It extends the study of early childhood pedagogy beyond documenting and planning, to the curriculum decision making cycle and reading a transition statement. Further, it extends the study of the National Quality Framework through production of a Quality Improvement Plan, Based on the National Quality Standard. It also covers the history, current and future directions of Early Childhood Education in Australia, and professional development topics relevant to the early childhood educator. Ten (10) full days of professional experience in a prior to school setting with children aged from 3 to 5 years will offer students the opportunity to link theoretical learning to classroom practice. (Note: the 10 days professional experience is spread over 10 weeks: that is, 1 day per week)
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding and implementation of the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG) and the Early Years Framework through engaging in the curriculum decision making cycle and creating a transition statement;
- Analyse and apply knowledge of contemporary policy and curriculum (Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG) and the Early Years Framework, National Quality Framework) to create strategies and solve problems in diverse contexts;
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the historic current situation and future direction of early childhood policy, programs and services in Australia;
- Critically examine professional issues relating to early childhood education and care to solve issues and propose strategies;
- Synthesise and consolidate pedagogical approaches, planning and assessment skills in early childhood education;
- Demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a 'developed' level and relevant ACECQA standards.
Assumed Knowledge: | It is assumed that you are familiar with child development and learning theory, the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), and the Australian Curriculum. |
