This subject introduces students to Internet standards, architectures, and technologies to develop knowledge of network devices, network models, and Internet protocols. Students will gain knowledge of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) and TCP/IP models and the technical standards, devices and LAN and WAN protocol involved at each layer of these models. Students will be introduced to subnetting, switching, routing, and network security to develop the skills required to design an efficient computer network. Students will also gain experience in the implementation and troubleshooting of core network devices.
Learning Outcomes
- describe the technologies, standards, devices for each layer of the OSI model;
- explain and implement network security at the lower layers of the OSI with access control lists;
- explain how the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) and TCP/IP reference models function in designing communications in Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) environments;
- efficiently design the IP addressing and topologies to implement a LAN and WAN network.
