CP2408 - Design Thinking and Creative IT Industries
Credit points: | 03 |
Year: | 2016 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band 2 |
Administered by: | College of Business, Law & Governance |
The aim of this subject is to provide students with a conceptual framework to understand the applications of creative technologies in the arts, the sciences, business and management. Students will discuss technology as well as social and industrial change and develop a practical and theoretical appreciation of the breadth and diversity of the ICT industry. Contemporary models for business innovation and the start-up culture will also be examined. Students will learn a variety of approaches to creative problem solving, the importance of multi and trans-disciplinary thinking and practical group collaboration and problem solving skills with an essential component being the engagement in a one-day "sprint" or "hackathon" event. The 'sprint' environment used in this subject will provide students an opportunity to develop these skills via a short-term practical exercise (or single day 'sprint') to collectively analyse a problem, design a practical solution and implement a solution in a single day. Individual reflection on the sprint process is intended to improve students understanding of their own capacities, interests and potential engagement in the knowledge economy.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse concepts of creative IT and disruptive technologies;
- respond to rapid IT system development requirements;
- demonstrate practical experience in high-pressure, collaborative, goal oriented system development;
- demonstrate the use of technology in non-traditional applications and apply IT in unfamiliar settings and contexts;
- appreciate at a high level the interplay between technology and business in modern entrepreneurial activity.
