BZ1006 - Diversity of Life
Credit points: | 03 |
Year: | 2016 |
Student Contribution Band: | Band 2 |
Administered by: | College of Science and Engineering |
This subject introduces students to the amazing biodiversity on planet Earth. It provides an introduction to the genesis and evolution of various life forms across earth's history, with an emphasis on the major groups of plants and animals. Primarily, we focus on aspects of their classification, morphology, physiology, behaviour, ecology and evolution. We also investigate the chemical and cellular basis of life that influences the form, function and behaviour of these different life forms.
Learning Outcomes
- To demonstrate a variety of fundamental practical techniques for studying plants and animals;
- To develop and use professional research and presentation skills;
- To identify and describe animal and plant cellular structure and function;
- To identify and discuss the environmental stressors specific to a variety of ecosystems (e.g. deserts, tropical rainforests, tundra);
- To explain common adaptations of plants and animals to a range of environmental stressors in different environments;
- To critically apply morphological, physiological and behavioural knowledge to whole plant and animal biology across different ecosystems.
