James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2016

BU3101 - Professional Internship

Credit points: 03
Year: 2016
Student Contribution Band: Band 3
Administered by: College of Business, Law & Governance

In addition to completion of 36 credit points of BU or BX subjects and enrolled in your last year of your course, students must access InPlace https://inplace.jcu.edu.au to apply for advertised internships or to submit applications for self-sourced internships. Advertised internships are allocated on a competitive basis, so submitting an application does not guarantee a placement. Students will be advised of the outcome of their applications by email. This process only applies to students enrolled on the Townsville or Cairns campus. External students must self-source their internships and submit an application on InPlace.

This subject is designed to integrate knowledge and skills developed throughout the degree in a practical workplace setting by undertaking a professional placement in a relevant, approved industry workplace. To apply, students must have completed a minimum 36 credit points of BU/BX subjects and be enrolled in their final year. Students who are unsure if they need to undertake WIL should confirm their enrolment requirements by contacting cblg.enrolments@jcu.edu.au. Students cannot self enrol, but are required to go through an application process and will be approved to enrol once an internship with an approved workplace is secured. Internship opportunities are advertised on InPlace (inplace.jcu.edu.au). Students can log in to view and apply for internships by uploading their current Resume and a cover letter highlighting their strengths and skills in relation to positions of interest. Internships advertised on InPlace close 4 weeks prior to the start of each study period and are offered on a competitive basis, so applying does not guarantee a placement. Students are encouraged to apply for multiple positions that align with their interest and skill level. Application deadlines will be communicated to students via email prior to the start of each study period. Each workplace conducts their own selection process and applicants will be advised of the outcome by email. Internships can also be self-sourced, and applications must also be submitted via InPlace no later than two weeks prior to the start of each study period. External students must self-source their own placement. Information to pass on to potential hosts outlining the requirements of the program is available on the website (jcu.edu.au/cblg/wil/business/). Students who are already employed should apply for BU3103 Independent Project. Note that students who successfully secure an internship and who do not fulfil the requirements as outlined in their signed 'Conditions of Professional Internship' form and subsequently fail to deliver for their industry partner are not permitted to reapply for an internship or to re-enrol in BU3101. However, students can still gain valuable industry experience by undertaking BU3102 Multidisciplinary Project.
