'The Asian Century' meets the 'Age of the City'. The world is situated at a pivotal point. Half the world's population now lives in cities, and half of the world's global cities are in Asia. This subject explores urbanisation through themed case studies of tropical Asian cities from the past to the future. Asian cities are undergoing rapid developments that are dramatically changing their cityscape, social and economic life as they transform from industrial, to important service, cultural and cosmopolitan centres. Yet, many cities in Asia also face serious challenges to social equality, infrastructure and sustainable development. The history and development of each Asian city looks very different. Some ancient and pre-modern centres created and disseminated religious, cultural, socio-economic and political developments; some have been strongly influenced by their colonial past. All are generating urban cultures of great diversity and complexity. This subject maps this fascinating urbanization through a series of themed lectures, including: sacred cities; lost cities; colonial cities; 1920s cities; imaginary cities; neon cities; slum cities; sin cities; global cities; cybercities and future cities. The subject includes a fieldtrip (virtual or real) of the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore.
