The aim of the subject is to provide knowledge and understanding of: the diversity of career opportunities available to veterinarians; the importance of animals to society and to the Australian economy; principles of animal behaviour and animal welfare; the safe handling of common species of animals; common breeds of companion animal and livestock species
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structure of the major animal industries in Australia and the significant contribution they make to the Australian society and economy;
- recognise and name the common breeds of companion animal and livestock species;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts of animal behaviour and animal welfare;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance of ethics to the practice of veterinary science and the maintenance of professional standards;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationship between climate, plants, soils and animal production;
- accurately perform routine dosage calculations commonly performed in veterinary practice;
- safely handle domestic animal species and name and demonstrate the application of equipment used in animal restraint and medication;
- Demonstrate knowledge of and practice skills, including reflection and review that lead to greater self-awareness, better communication skills and an improved ability to learn and work with a group.

Assessment: | end of semester exam (60%); on course assessment (40%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | Attendance at Practical classes and workshops is compulsory. A pass standard in animal handling is required. Must pass safety competencies for practical animal handling. |
