This subject aims to prepare participants for international work in emergency response settings, particularly focused on displaced populations. Topics covered include: international humanitarian law, rapid assessment, organsiation and coordination, basic epidemiology in emergency settings, disease control, vaccination, nutrition, reproductive health, water, sanitation & shelter and health and safety of the field worker. Guest lecturers with extensive field experience and technical expertise from a range of organisations contribute to this subject. This subject is suitable for both clinical and non-clinical participants.

Learning Outcomes

• Articulate the major public health issues in an emergency setting;
• apply humanitarian principles in refugee settings;
• Discuss the organisation of health services and the multi-sectorial approach to reduce the health impact in emergency settings;
• Evaluate the public health situation in an emergency setting and propose appropriate responses;
• Approach an emergency refugee setting with insight into the challenges faced by humanitarian workers.
