This is a core subject for students enrolled in the Master of Social Science degree
This subject is aimed at assisting postgraduate students to gain an understanding of an advanced, integrated body of knowledge regarding research in the Social Sciences, including ethics, theories, research principles and methods. Students will have the opportunity to investigate topics, worldviews, methodologies, methods and processes for social science research and demonstrate their proficiency in designing, planning and executing a substantial social science research project. The subject will focus on qualitative methods, with content on quantitative methodologies, mixed method design and discipline specific research designs.
Learning Outcomes
- students will have an understanding of an advanced, integrated body of knowledge regarding research in the Social Sciences including ethics, theories, research principles and methods;
- students will design, plan and execute a substantial research project in the Social Sciences;
- students will have knowledge of qualitiative, quantitative and mixed methodologies;
- students will be able to summarise and critique a range of social science research in discipline specific articles;
- students will have produced a well-written research proposal demonstrating logical flow and an ethical and respectful approach to research;
- students will have developed an understanding of issues encountered when researching across diverse contexts;
- students will have developed an understanding through the literature of recent perspectives of policy makers as linked to undertaking research;
- students will demonstrate a high level of responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional development.
