SL3002 - Swallowing Disabilities Across the Lifespan

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

This subject will provide the theoretical foundation and skill base necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management of clients who have swallowing disabilities across the lifespan, head and neck cancer, trachestomy and laryngectomy will also be discussed. Aetiological factors causing swallowing problems of people of any age will be described. Methods of assessment including informal, formal and instrumental approaches will be addressed. Diagnostic and treatment planning skills will be developed. Direct treatment approaches as well as compensatory and education intervention strategies will be described. The effects of swallowing disabilities and head and neck problems on activities and participation across the lifespan will also be a focus of discussion.

Learning Outcomes

• able to report on findings and make recommendations for future management for swallowing disabilities;
• able to demonstrate awareness of aetiological factors involved in swallowing disabilities; and select and administer appropriate informal and formal assessments for analysing the swallowing function;
• able to develop comprehensive and detailed plans for intervention for swallowing disabilities and will understand their role in working with others to ensure optimum patient management;
• able to analyse and interpret findings with regard to knowledge of normal swallowing function across the lifespan; and identify further information and referral requirements for swallowing disabilities across the lifespan;
• demonstrate knowledge of the speech pathologists role in provision of counselling and intervention strategies (including oesophageal speech, tracheo-oesophageal puncture speech and artificial larynx training procedures) for people requiring a larngectomy in the pre and post-operative stages.

Assessment:	end of semester exam (40%); presentations (30%); assignments (30%).
Special Assessment Requirements:	Students must achieve a minimum of 50% in each assessment component to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and participate in a minimum of 80% of all tutorials, workshops and practical sessions.
