In this subject students explore the theoretical concepts of person, health, environment and caring as they relate to nursing. A primary focus of this subject is developing an awareness of the health status of the individual, the family and the community. In nursing skills laboratories, opportunities are provided to develop and consolidate foundational clinical skills used in assessment and intervention when caring for persons requiring assistance with activities of living.

Learning Outcomes

• apply assessment tools for basic data collection when monitoring individual health status against parameters of "normal";
• demonstrate an understanding of the principal concepts of health, environment and caring as they relate to nursing practice;
• describe the influence of variables such as culture, lifestyle, values and beliefs on the health of the individual, the family and the community;
• develop an awareness of the health needs of diverse groups within Australian society;
• develop the foundation clinical skills needed for the assessment of the health status of the individual, the family and the community;
• outline the precautions necessary to maintain a safe environment for the patient, the nurse and colleagues.
