This subject provides students with a strong grounding in facilitative mediation, and the opportunity to develop practical skills used as a facilitative mediator. The subject meets the requirements of the National Mediator Accreditation Standards, and after completing this subject students are eligible to sit the competency assessment for National Accreditation as a Mediator under the Standards. The subject gives students the essential negotiation, mediation and communication skills required to become a mediator. Students will also receive individual coaching on their mediation skills from experienced practitioners. The mediator skills assessment and the application for accreditation through a Recognised Mediator Accreditation Body is NOT included in LB5501.

Learning Outcomes

• evaluate complex conflict and related theories and standards for professional practice in CMR;
• effectively communicate with, facilitate and support people in personal, group, organisational and cross-cultural conflict;
• independently and critically reflect on and assess their own capabilities and performance, and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support personal and professional development;
• exercise independent ethical judgment and initiative in conflict management and resolution practice and research.

Face to face teaching 08-May-2015 to 24-May-2015 (Two workshops, each of three days duration. 08 - 10 May and 22 - 24 May 2015. This subject is taught primarily online through LearnJCU and students need to participate online throughout the whole study period. In limited mode there is also a compulsory face-to-face workshop for skills activities. Students must engage in online learning from the first week of the study period and throughout the entire study period.)
