This subject is designed to provide students with an overview of the professional responsibilities associated with the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of patient records and health information. Students will become aware of the importance of patient records and health information, and understand the impact on those stakeholders that use patient data for clinical and management decision-making. Students will be able to explain the coding systems, processes and the elements that make up healthcare activity reporting eg ICD, DRGs and explain the traditional and changing management of patient information in an electronic health record environment. Students will also gain insight into the impact of privacy and security, within a traditional paper-based and an electronic environment, and explain the management responsibilities to protect patient identification information. On completion of this subject the student should have a solid knowledge of the elements of health record management and the related processes and services within a healthcare service, and apply this knowledge when designing solutions and evaluating issues in their future professional interactions.
