Disaster management in the response and recovery phase of emergency events requires people who are capable of facilitating adaptive, innovative and collaborative processes which bring together diverse groups of individuals, communities and organisations to achieve effective and ethical outcomes. These individuals will demonstrate a strong understanding of disaster management principles, legislation and governance arrangements allied with high level communication skills , the ability to build and maintain relationships with individuals and groups, an understanding of the political context of disaster, problem-solving and decision-making abilities and the ability to create short, medium and long term strategies for the benefit of the communities they serve.

Learning Outcomes

• identify, analyse and problem-solve issues which impact on individuals, communities, organisations and regions during disaster events;
• demonstrate ability to understand and assess requirements for managing the response and recovery phases;
• demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the principles for effective response to disaster events, including the role individuals, communities and organisations;
• demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of community-led recovery;
• demonstrate a high-level ability to evaluate the outcomes of response and recovery actions for post-event reviews, enquiries and organisational improvement.

Assumed Knowledge:

It is assumed that students enrolling in this subject will have and undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in Emergency Management
