Transport phenomena approach to mass transfer. Molecular diffusion in solids, liquids and gases. Models for mass transfer coefficient. General principles of mass transfer operations in stagewise and continuous contact equipment. Binary distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, gas absorption, membrane separation, adsorption, drying and cyrstallization.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of the various mass transfer operations such as gas absorption, liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, membrane separation, adsorption, leaching and washing, drying and crystallization;
- understand the principles of unit operations in chemical industries;
- apply the skills to design mass transfer operation equipment;
- possess commitment to life-long learning of advances in mass transfer operations as a professional engineer;
- communicate effectively various aspects of mass transfer principles, operations and its applications to fellow engineers.
