Inorganic Chemistry. Chemical periodicity: chemistry of representative elements from Groups 1A-4A: ionic and covalent molecular compounds. Organometallic and coordination chemistry of the transition elements: spectra, structure and reactivity of metal complexes. Crystal field theory. Organic Chemistry. Purification, characterisation and structural determination of organic compounds using chromatography, spectroscopy (IR, NMR, UV-Vis) and microanalysis. Mechanisms and applications of major reaction types: radical substitution, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, nucleophilic addition, electrophilic aromatic substitution. Conjugation, resonance and aromaticity. Valence bond theory. Polymers. Physical Chemistry. Phase equilibria. Real gases. Boltzman distribution. Redox and metathesis reactions. Atomic structure. Molecular orbital theory. Band structure theory and Semiconductors. New materials (alloys, ceramics). Colloids: preparation and general properties. Metallurgy, redox and metathesis reactions.
Learning Outcomes
- be aware of the applicability of chemical principles and reactions in the wider scientific context and clearly convey meaning through written assessment;
- be familiar with, and competent in the application of a range of common laboratory techniques in chemistry, including data recording, analysis and interpretation;
- have gained a sound understanding of the major principles, theories, concepts and reactions involved in molecular organic and inorganic chemistry;
- interpret and analyze data generated from experimental or theoretical problems;
- be able to gather, interpret and evaluate scientific information from a variety of sources.
