James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2015

BU3101 - Professional Internship

Credit points: 03
Year: 2015
Student Contribution Band: Band 3
Administered by: College of Business, Law & Governance

In addition to completion of 36 credit points of BU or BX subjects and enrolled in your last year of your course, students must access InPlace https://inplace.jcu.edu.au to apply for advertised internships or to submit applications for self-sourced internships. Advertised internships are allocated on a competitive basis, so submitting an application does not guarantee a placement. Students will be advised of the outcome of their applications by email. This process only applies to students enrolled on the Townsville or Cairns campus. External students must self-source their internships and submit an application on InPlace.

This subject is designed to integrate knowledge and skills developed throughout the degree in a practical workplace setting. Students undertake a professional placement in a relevant, approved industry workplace and through a number of tasks reflect upon personal and professional growth and evaluate the theory/practice nexus. Students cannot self enrol into this subject. Enrolment will be approved once a student successfully secures an internship with an approved workplace. To be eligible to apply, students must have completed a minimum 36 credit points of BU or BX subjects and be enrolled in their final year of study. Available internship opportunities are advertised on InPlace. Students can log in using their jc user name and password to view and apply for these internships by uploading their current Resume and a cover letter highlighting their strengths and skills in relation to positions of interest. Application deadlines will be communicated prior to the commencement of each study period. Internships advertised on InPlace are offered on a competitive basis, so submitting an application does not guarantee a place. Once applications close, each workplace will conduct their own selection process and applicants will be advised of the outcome by email. This process only applies to students enrolled on the Townsville or Cairns campus. Internships can also be self-sourced, and applications must be submitted via InPlace by no later than four weeks prior to the commencement of each study period. External students must self-source their own placement. Students who are already employed should consider applying for BU3103 Independent Project, a subject designed specifically for employed students. For more information on Professional Internships and how to apply or self-source, please go to the College website: http://www.jcu.edu.au/cblg/wil/business/.
