This course aims to prepare for the management of childhood disease in resource poor settings. It is based on what one of its organisers wished he had known when he became responsible for a refugee camp in Vietnam after only one year of residency without any paediatrics. It is, therefore, a clinical exercise in the recognition and management of sick children suffering from malnutrition, various infections and some surgical conditions. More broadly, it will consider the determinants of such suffering but it is essentially clinical. It begins with basic concepts and pursues them through examples of disease more commonly seen in 'the tropics'. It is designed for practitioners intending to work in rural Australia as well as developing countries. It is complete in itself but prepares the way for TM5534 Clinical Tropical Paediatrics which is a two week visit to Bangladesh in November. It draws heavily on personal experience in Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh and other developing countries. This subject has a strong clinical focus and as such is recommended for clinicians only. It is a pre-requisite for TM5559: Clinical tropical paediatrics.

Learning Outcomes

• Assess a sick child and using an understanding of pathophysiology develop a management plan for shock;
• Explain the pathophysiology, diagnosis and clinical management of common diseases of childhood in tropical environments;
• Evaluate the various stages of under nutrition in children, including specific issues such as iron deficiency, and plan appropriate management;
• Plan the management of various conditions in a resource poor setting such as burns, fractures, lacerations and animal bites, stings and infestations;
• Articulate the principles of management of newborns in resource poor settings and examine public health issues affecting child health in resource poor settings..
