This subject introduces the general principles of international public health and the concepts of disease prevention, health policy, advocacy, disease control, health education and promotion and health program evaluation. Specific epidemiological case studies will focus on international public health problems in the tropics and how different resources could be utilised, including information technologies. The contribution of public health to improving international health is emphasised.
Learning Outcomes
- appreciate the scope and nature of tropical public health;
- have an understanding of the epidemiology and control of the common tropical diseases and problems relevant to Australasia, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region;
- be able to apply the general principles of health promotion and education, health policy and advocacy;
- better provide for rural sanitation and water supply;
- be able to develop strategies of improvement of maternal and child health, immunisation and other major public health issues.
