Enrolment in this subject is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology IHCAP Programs.
In this subject, students will develop their knowledge and skills necessary for implementing Evidence-Based Practice in the field of speech pathology. A major part of this will involve students working in small groups to address a clinical project within an Evidence-Based Practice framework. Projects may be centred on: developing a particular speech pathology service within the community; improving the quality of speech pathology practice (for example within a specified area, or range of practice) through the development of clinical resources, reports, or guidelines; or may involve the development of websites or other resources for a particular audience (e.g. clinicians, patients/clients, parents, carers). It is expected that students will take steps to demonstrate a clinical need and rationale for their project through both critical reviews of literature and through information gathering from key stakeholders (e.g. speech pathology clinicians, speech pathology service managers, other healthcare workers, patients/clients, parents, carers, teachers, the general public, etc.). This subject dovetails with SL4006 Speech Pathology Professional Projects Part B in study period 2. Throughout this subject, the focus is on: students defining the scope of their project; demonstrating a clear need and rationale for the development of their project; and planning for the completion of the project. This will be achieved through the development of a literature review and a project plan that maps out what the project will involve and how it will be completed. This will then be picked up in Part B in study period 2 where students will complete the project and plan for how the project will be implemented and disseminated.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of the principles, rationales, and professional responsibilities towards Evidence-Based Practice within various aspects of the practice of speech pathology;
- demonstrate competency in applying skills required for evidence-based practice within the practice of speech pathology, specifically in relation to information searching, critical appraisal and literature reviewing;
- understand the role of quality improvement/assurance within the practice of speech pathology;
- demonstrate an understanding of the importance of capacity building within the practice of speech pathology.
