This subject introduces students to speech pathology clinical processes and competencies through class and experiential clinical activities. In the class based component students will discuss the knowledge, skills and attitudes which are used by speech pathologists as outlined in CBOS 2011 with an emphasis on client centred and evidence based approaches to the management of communication difficulties. Students will apply basic principles required for speech pathology assessment and intervention including integration of prior learning (such as acoustics, phonetics, linguistics and anatomy) to speech pathology assessment and treatment to understand the principles of speech pathology practice. Students will undertake a number of observations as well as clinical education placements in which they will work with supervision by and guidance from clinical educators. They will have the opportunity to observe and work directly with paediatric clients with speech and language impairments with a range of impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. A range of settings, both in the internal clinic and external facilities will be used to ensure that students begin to develop clinical competence with a variety of clients and in differing clinical contexts.
Learning Outcomes
- understand and apply the CBOS 2011 (Competency Based Occupational Standards 2011, Speech Pathology Australia), the Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics (2010), the International Classification of Function, and the principles of Evidence Based Practice, adult learning and group work;
- " begin to use clinical reasoning in assessment and management decisions regarding case studies and clinical activities and communicate reasoning, observations and clinical findings verbally and in writing in an accurate, professional and ethical manner;
- evaluate and use a variety of approaches in assessment and management;
- begin to make accurate observations and begin to develop effective interaction and interviewing skills with clients and others;
- begin to develop reflective clinical competence with reference to the behavioural descriptors in COMPASS® (Generic Professional Competencies 1-4 and CBOS 2011 Units 1-4).

| Assessment: | end of semester exam (% - 30%); clinical competencies clinical competencies based on compass® generic units and cbos units 1-4, assessed on pass/fail basis (% - 40%); assignments (% - 20%); portfolio (% - 10%); cpr and first aid training (%). |
| Special Assessment Requirements: | All assessment components must be passed. The clinical competencies item is marked as a non-graded pass/fail. A student who passes the clinical competencies item is awarded a grade for the subject based on the total of the marks awarded for the remaining assessment items |
