Available to students with an undergraduate health discipline degree with prior approval of the subject co-ordinator. Residential component is compulsory.

Human sexual development across the lifespan will be described with relevance to issues raised within health professionals practice. Cultural issues that occur within a multicultural society and gender choices will be explored in conjunction with professional ethics, religion, morality and Australian law. Students will gain knowledge of sexual concerns and issues for people with disabilities. This subject does not intend to equip students with the skills to conduct sex counselling.

Learning Outcomes

• define the scope of human sexuality throughout the lifespan;
• outline the role and limitations of allied health professionals in the management of sexual issues and dysfunction for the client;
• understand the influence of culture, history, religion and the contemporary moral and ethical views on human sexuality;
• re-evaluate own sexual attitudes;
• identify possible effects of illness, injury, disability on sexual functioning. Demonstrate competency in the support of clients to express concerns in relation to problems and dysfunction associated with various disabilities.

Bachelor degree in health discipline
