OT3104 - Rural and Urban Practice for Graduates

Available to students who have successfully completed a bachelor degree in nursing or other relevant health professional program and can prove currency of their studies or in practice. Knowledge gained from previous degree will be assessed by the Academic Advisor for Occupational Therapy prior to enrolment in this program.

This subject will provide a minimum of 266 hours (seven weeks at 38 hours/week) of supervised practice education placement with flexible support from the University. The aim of this placement is to integrate previously learnt material with new observations and practical clinical education. The placement will be either rural or urban and will enable the student to apply and utilise the theories and principles of occupational therapy in a variety of settings.Students may be required to undertake placements in a facility away from the campus at which they are currently enrolled, at their own expense.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate skill in observing and evaluating the nature and degree of disability or illness of clients and in re-evaluating these, following occupational therapy intervention;
• apply and integrate the theories and principles of occupational therapy in the placement setting, demonstrate clear and appropriate communication skills to enable therapeutic interactions;
• demonstrate skill in formulating aims of occupational therapy intervention for clients at any level of recovery or service delivery and in selecting culturally appropriate therapeutic activities and techniques to fulfil these aims;
• identify the unique roles and functions of occupational therapy within the placement environment;
• work as an effective team within a range of settings to develop skills in the provision of occupational therapy services applicable to the placement environment and develop evidence based practice and clinical reasoning skills relevant to occupational therapy service delivery.
