This subject explores the factors impacting on the provision of midwifery care to Murri (Aboriginal) and Torres Strait Islander women and their families with a specific focus on promoting and improving the health of Murri and Torres Strait Islander women and families of Queensland. The subject is designed to promote the role of midwives in delivering midwifery care to Murri women and Torres Strait Islander women and their families within a primary health care and acute midwifery care setting. The student will develop an understanding and awareness of the historical and contemporary socio-political and cultural considerations which influence the health of Murri and Torres Strait Island women and their families in regards to accessing and receiving midwifery care. In addition, the student will develop an understanding of the importance of 'relationship to country' for Murri and Torres Strait Islander women in relation to their maternity care. Models of midwifery care will be introduced and explored with particular reference to appropriate models of midwifery care for Murri and Torres Strait Islander women and families.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island life perceptions of health using the World Health Organisation (WHO) and National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) definition of health;
• critically examine the impact of colonisation, through the policy and practices of governments on Murri and Torres Strait Island family dynamics;
• contextualize and apply knowledge of Murri and Torres Strait Islander family relationships and family function in relation to midwifery care;
• critically appraise their own attitudes and practice in delivering midwifery care to Murri and Torres Strait Islander women and their families;
• understand, identify, critically analyse and contextualize the historical, sociocultural and socio-political determinants of Murri peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples health in relation to midwifery care.
