The focus of this subject is to prepare the future graduate midwife with sufficient knowledge of legislation, policy, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics to safely and effectively work within maternity service drug therapy protocols.
Learning Outcomes
- 1. Critically apply knowledge of the Health Drug and Poisons Regulation (1996) or equivalent to midwifery practice; 2. Analyse and evaluate the Drug Therapy Protocol: Midwifery (2011) Queensland Government or equivalent;
- 3. Summarise the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of medications identified in the drug therapy protocol QLD (2011) or equivalent; 4. Distinguish, discriminate and discern the relevant evidence obtained from the woman's history, physical examination, diagnostic data and collaborative information to identify the most appropriate therapeutic management of the woman's health status;
- 5. Appraise the three levels of consultation and referral as outline by the Australian College of Midwives (2008); 6. Describe and defend the midwife's responsibility in documenting the application of the Drug Therapy Protocol;
- 7. Synthesise and formulate information to the woman in a manner consistent with women centred care; 8. Demonstrates the ability to retrieve, critically evaluate and apply evidence in midwifery practice;
- 9. Adhere to the philosophy, ethics and ANMC (2006) National Competency Standards for the Midwife commensurate to the expectations of an entry level graduate midwife.
