This subject builds on existing midwifery knowledge and provides students with the opportunity to critically examine pertinent professional and practice issues. Students explore actual and predicted roles and responsibilities of the midwife within the wider socio-political agendas locally, nationally and globally.
Learning Outcomes
- critically examine the effects of current policy and guidelines on the provision, outcomes and quality of maternity care;
- use the ANMC Competency Standards for midwifery practice, and its Codes of Ethics, to identify current and future learning needs;
- prioritise professional responsibilities and duty of care to ensure safe midwifery care;
- practice midwifery in an accountable manner guided by the ANMC Code of Ethics, Competency Standards and Professional Conduct;
- critically evaluate research findings and identify "best practice" in midwifery and work collaboratively with others in the development of practice.
