This subject has been designed as a capstone for the Bachelor of Nursing Science offered at James Cook University. The capstone subject is designed to integrate the students' ability to critically reflect upon discipline specific knowledge with authentic learning experiences in a supportive environment and culture. As an exit subject students will be provided with opportunities to apply knowledge and experience gained over the course of study. A crucial aspect of the capstone is to foster each student's ability to exercise clinical and professional judgement, facilitating a smooth transition to their new role as a registered nurse. The purpose of the subject will be to expand upon acquired knowledge gained in the previous subjects as well as providing practical strategies to assist the student to gain graduate employment and establish a career in nursing. The capstone subject will include an emphasis on assessment, implementation and collaborative management of a person requiring complex health care. Clinical experience will occur in medical, surgical and specialised areas of nursing practice. Students will be introduced to basic principles of management and leadership exploring the concepts of accountability, responsibility, change and influence within organisations. Key areas for this subject will be scope and standards of professional practice, clinical application of knowledge and nursing care, interpersonal collaboration and communication, supervision and delegation and the quality improvement of care.
Learning Outcomes
- (1) Assess and manage persons with complex health care problems; (2) Demonstrate clinical nursing skills and techniques in caring for individuals with complex health problems; (3) Provide safe and effective nursing care to persons' with complex health problems; (4) Integrate theoretical and practical knowledge into clinical practice;
- (5) Acquire knowledge which will assist in making sound clinical decisions; (6) Utilise evidence-based information for nursing practice; (7) Develop strategies for managing complex clinical situations, and apply ethical and legal principles to complex health situations; (8) Where necessary be able to refine assessment and planning skills in order to provide optimum care for a person with complex health needs;
- (9) Contribute effectively to group processes within the workplace; (10) Critically analyse the process of transition from student to novice RN; (11) Discuss quality improvement functions as components of the nurses' responsibility to the profession and to the organisation; (12) Display the ability to integrate a number of leadership and management strategies into the novice RN role;
- (13) Discuss key issues associated with the Scope of Practice for Nurses; (14) Investigate key elements associated with seeking employment as an RN and developing a career in nursing; (15) Explore the concepts of leadership, change management and accountability within health care settings; (16) Identify the quality improvement functions within the entry level registered nurse's role and their relationship to person, the profession and organisation;
- (17) Develop strategies for managing complex clinical situations; (18) Discuss the group dynamics associated with interdisciplinary multicultural interactions within the workplace, including the key skill of negotiation; (19) Apply ethical and legal principles to complex health situations; and (20) Demonstrate the ability to function as an entry level registered nurse by the completion of clinical placement.
